The Speckledy Hen is a vibrant, independent café situated in the picturesque village of Shamley Green, between Guildford and Cranleigh. Previously an old forge, the café brims with character. We are open from Monday to Saturday from 8am until 4pm (Saturdays 9am) for breakfast, coffee & cakes, light lunch and afternoon tea - served either inside the café or in our cosy patio garden. We also offer a take away service with many tasty salads, quiches and sandwiches.

We enjoy a wide customer base, whether you are meeting friends for coffee, lunching with your family, having a business meeting, walking, cycling -  you will be assured of a warm welcome by our friendly staff. Wifi is available.

All our food is made daily on the premises using high quality fresh, seasonal ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible. We can provide bespoke catering for events either on or off the premises - if you are planning a birthday, anniversary or other celebration, we would be delighted to help you.

Our sister café, The Dabbling Duck is located in the village of Shere about 15 minutes drive from The Speckledy Hen. The cafe has a similar rustic feel and the same passionate approach towards quality of food and customer service. With a more extensive menu, the café / restaurant has a wide variety of meals for consumption on and off the premises. The Dabbling Duck is open from 9am until 5pm from Monday to Friday, and until 5.30 on weekends and bank holidays (with some seasonal variation).

How we came to be…

Cathy and Christina met as mums at their children’s school playground. Cathy had a background in hospitality and Christina in retail merchandising and they both shared a passion for delicious tasting food. They opened their first café The Speckledy Hen in Shamley Green in 2012, followed shortly by The Dabbling Duck in 2013.

Both cafes have a relaxed ‘home from home’ feel with rustic style furniture that was sourced at various vintage markets. The walls and shelves are adorned with signs and gifts to buy, as well as jars of chutneys, pickles and jams – all made on the premises by our talented team of chefs. We are really committed to reducing food miles, so the following are a selection of our local suppliers who have been chosen because of the quality and provenance of their products:

Celebration Cakes, Cranleigh
Coffee Real, Horsham
Rawlings Butchers, Cranleigh
Sussex Charmer, Rudgwick
West Horsley Dairies, Woking
Coopers Fine Foods, Hampshire
Kokoh Chocolate, Ewhurst
Norbury Blue Cheese, Albury
